Potty training: how it works
Me: Emma, you know how you've been going on the potty...how about wearing big girl's knickers today?
Emma: No thanks, Mummy. Wear nappy today.
Me: But Emma, you're soo good at doing wees on the potty, why not real pants like a great, big, clever girl?
Emma: (thinks for a moment.) No, Mummy. Want a nappy.
Me: But Emma (tries to keep desperation out of voice), wouldn't it feel nice not to have a nappy on your bottom, to be all clean and....(searches for right word)...free?
Emma: (shouts) WANT A NAPPY MUMMY!
Me: But...but
Emma: (as if world is about to end) WANT NAPPY! WANT A NAPPY MUMMY! WAAAAHHHH!
Me: Okay! Okay! (puts nappy on bottom to avoid impending metldown.)
(heavy sigh)

Oh give me a break...Emma's only 2! Our first two were both 3 and a half when they wanted to go on the potty. I have both read and experienced that the potty training goes faster if they're older. Yeah, I changed a lot of diapers...but I never had to change a lot of clothes or bedding! :) Don't worry about it...she'll let you know when she's ready...she already seems pretty articulate about telling you that she's not! :)
welcome to potty world!! In the Uk children have to be potty trained before they can attend pre-school and so waiting until they are 3 1/2 is not an option. She'll be loving her knicks before you know it. We bought Ez Bob the builder pants and he is loathed to wet Bob, so they're a great incentive (some times) xx
Children go to preschool before they're 3 in the UK? Poor kids...I guess my personal conviction is that kids shouldn't have to go to school until they're at least 5...the major part of their personality is formed by then, and I don't really want it formed by people I don't know! Anyway, that's not what this is about...take heart...they do go on the potty eventually! And no, you won't be changing diapers until they're 6...even though right now it probably feels that way. With our girl, I gave her a candy every time she went on the potty (she's the kind of kid that needs immediate gratification!) When she got good at it, I only gave it when she pooped...and now I don't give it at all. It worked great...but I had to make sure I brushed her teeth well too! ;)
Pre school begins the september after their third birthday in the Uk- though it is not compulsory.
I guess we've been very lucky in that Joaquim has not been wearing nappies at all for 6 months now. However, we live outdoors in a hot climate which means he can simply pee anywhere in the garden at any time so he doesn't have to hold on, and wet clothes are not such a hassle. He still has the occasional accident of course. I think the important thing is not to pressure her and give her lots of praise and it will come in its own time.
According to family legend I told my parents I was not going to be potty trained until I was three years old - "When I'm three I'll do pipi" is what I said, probably just because I liked the way it rhymed - and I waited until my third birthday to the day. Apparently I used to go and stand in the bathroom before I went in my nappy, so it's not like I didn't understand what was required. Moral of the story: kids are stubborn.
